Keep some DAMDEX and cement handy in the house. You never know when you will be inspired to start creating. Also there is always something that needs fixing so keeping DAMDEX and a plastic bagful of fresh cement powder makes good sense. In a humid climate cement in a plastic bag stays fresh longer than in a paper bag, by the way.
If you are anything like me you will want to have the fountain up and working as soon as poss. A thick, putty-like mix helps, quickly securing the pipe in the hole in the middle of the fountain.
If your fountain is already working but the sound of running water is faint a thick mix is also useful to block off some of the outflow slots to increase the sound of cascading water. Because thick mix is not affected by water you can apply it while the fountain bowls are full of water and in operation.
For best results use a thick mix and work on an unpainted, clean surface. If the original molding protrudes a few centimetres from the wall, hammer in a few concrete nails every few centimetres and be sure they will not protrude when the molding is complete. The nails help the thick mix bind better. Wet the area to be treated and start to build up the molding until it matches its surroundings. Better to mix a little cement at a time and apply bit by bit. As it is drying mix a little more and so on. How similar it finally is with the original molding depends on your skill and dexterity.

Place in position then apply the thin mix with a brush or roller. Let the first coat dry then apply a second coat at 90 degrees to the first application.
